Bam Nuttall, a leading infrastructure company, has been selected to spearhead a range of transformative infrastructure projects as part of the ambitious £4 billion Victoria North regeneration program in Manchester. The funding for these initiatives was secured last year through a collaboration between Manchester City Council and the Far East Consortium, which successfully obtained a substantial £51.6 million grant from the UK Government's Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF). Established in July 2017, the HIF aims to support infrastructure schemes that actively contribute to the development of new housing.
Partnering with renowned design firm Arup, Bam Nuttall has been entrusted with the pivotal role of primary design and construction contractor. Their extensive responsibilities encompass multiple crucial aspects, including the clearance and preparation of undeveloped brownfield land in Victoria North, previously known as the Northern Gateway scheme. This vital preparatory work will pave the way for future development by implementing flood defence measures and seamlessly connecting the sites to existing local road networks. The contract also encompasses comprehensive road upgrades to enhance the transportation infrastructure within the area. Adding to the project's scope, the team will create an expansive new five-hectare City River Park along the picturesque Irk River Valley, providing a captivating green space for the community.
Currently, the team is diligently engaged in crafting detailed designs in anticipation of submitting a comprehensive planning application in the coming spring. The initial phase of the project holds great promise, as it will facilitate the construction of over 5,500 new homes within the next 10 to 15 years. Notably, approximately 1,000 of these residences will be designated as affordable rental and sale properties, addressing the pressing need for accessible housing.
The grand vision for the Victoria North regeneration program encompasses far-reaching objectives, aiming to deliver an impressive total of 15,000 new houses across an expansive 155-hectare area within the next two decades. This transformative undertaking extends beyond housing, with a firm commitment to introducing essential transportation infrastructure and state-of-the-art educational facilities, further enhancing the quality of life for the residents.
Gareth Farrier, the esteemed divisional director for Scotland and Northern England at Bam Nuttall expressed unwavering confidence in the company's capabilities. He highlighted their exemplary track record in delivering successful infrastructure projects and their commendable contribution to creating attractive public spaces that enrich communities. Notable examples of their past achievements include renowned projects like Kings Cross, Nine Elms, and London's iconic 2012 Olympic Park, further solidifying their reputation for excellence.
To ensure the seamless execution of this monumental endeavour, Turner & Townsend has been appointed as the project delivery consultant, bringing their expertise to the table. Pell Frischmann has been engaged as the design support consultant, providing valuable insights and guidance throughout the project. The critical role of flood defence works contractor has been entrusted to VolkerStevin, further bolstering the project's robust team of experts and ensuring the successful implementation of comprehensive flood prevention measures.
The collaborative efforts of these esteemed entities, led by Bam Nuttall, signify a momentous step forward in the realisation of the Victoria North regeneration program. With their combined expertise and unwavering commitment, they are poised to shape the future landscape of Manchester, creating thriving communities, fostering sustainable growth, and leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.
